Infernal Devices: Clock Work Angel Book Review

Today I’m doing a book review on a book that I finished today, the 4th of November. After finishing my last University exam, I took it upon myself to finish this book: Clock Work Angel by Cassandra Clare, the first series in the Infernal Devices series.

I’m reading this series along with the Mortal Instrument series by publication date. I wrote a post on this as I have been told that the order in which you read this series is rather important if you want the true experience of these series: : Mortal Instruments and Infernal device order.

I had a lot of mixed emotions for this book, with it being my first time reading the Infernal Device series I wanted to write my review while it was all fresh in my mind. This review may contain spoilers so please read on at your own discretion.

Summary:

This book tells the tale of a shy girl called Tessa who leaves New York to move to London to live with her Brother Nate after her Auntie Harriet the only family member she has left apart from Nate passed away suddenly. When Tessa arrives in London she finds that Nate is not there to meet her like his letter said he would, instead a carriage and two women are waiting, being told that her brother sent these two women to pick her up and after seeing a letter written in his hand writing that the women gave her explaining the change of plans trusts these women and go along with them. They introduce them selves as the Dark Sisters. The story is about how Tessa discovers that in fact she has been kidnapped and must do what she is told other wise her brother will be killed only to find out everything is a lie and she doesn’t know who she is anymore. She discovers the Nephilim world and the Downworlders actually exist. Her whole world is torn upside down and she must fight to stay alive but also discover who she can actually trust.

My feelings and opinions:

I found this book beautiful to read, but also quite emotional. Tessa goes through so much in this book, it surprises me that such a person would not just break down and cry or give up, especially after being tortured, discovering that she isn’t human but in fact a warlock as well as finding out her brother sold her to a guy for money and power. I feel like no person in real life could deal with this much hurt and not cry. I know I definitely would of had some issues after going through all this. But I think that this is what makes Tessa such a good character, she is an inspiration for readers. But at the same a bit relatable, especially the teasing that she gets from another female character in the book about her appearance, I got so angry and wished I could have punched this other girl for Tessa.

I was quite torn with the love triangle that occurred with Tessa, Jem and Will. I found that Will could be very sweet and caring when he wanted to but he was also that guy that would be far to complicated to date because he shut of his emotions and was always quite hurtful. I definitely shipped Tessa and Jem because they were just so cute together and understood each other on levels that Will and Tessa probably couldn’t. I feel that this is what makes the book so enjoyable to read because its so engaging, who is she going to chose in the end? it’s that feeling of please chose this guy….! And you end up shipping them completely and you know you will be really upset if it doesn’t happen by the end of the series. That’s what I am like with Tessa and Jem, I ship them completely. I’m completely in love with idea and I’m not even sorry!

Cassandra Clare writes characters are full of flaws yet still perfect in their own way in people’s eyes. Making the characters so relatable in their emotions and their personality’s that you cant help but feel a connection with one of more with the characters, making you feel like you are not a reader but in fact in this fantasy world yourself fighting along side the main character. I had a lot of trouble putting this book down even to sleep, my fiancé had to take it away from me because otherwise I would be staying up too late and I would not have been able to do my University exams.

I also loved the covers of these books, Cassandra Clare always seems to have beautifully designed book covers for her series.

Rating:

I give this book 4 stars, I truly recommend reading this series if you are a fan of the Mortal Instruments series, and if you aren’t, that is still okay, you can give this a chance if you like, I doubt you will regret it if you like a young adult fantasy book to bury yourself in for a day! 🙂
