‘The Eighth Story. Nineteen years Later….
It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children.
While Harry grapples with his past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes darkness comes from unexpected places.’
The above is the description written on the inside cover of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
July 21st 2007 was the day the last book of Harry Potter was released; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, the book we all wanted but were dreading at the same time. We didn’t want it to end! But when news got released that J.K Rowling was working with John Tiffany and Jack Thorne to release a script form of a new Harry Potter story that was set 19 years in the future all us Harry Potter fans could have died with happiness, it was a dream come true!
Everyone was racing in stores to pick up their copy of the new Harry Potter book. However, there has been some debate about the book as it was in script form not novel form. Before I start my thoughts on this new Harry Potter book, I must warn that there will be spoilers, so if you have not read it yet and don’t want spoilers, stop here! go pick up that book and come back. I don’t want anything ruined for you, but if you love some spoilers, then go right ahead and read what I’m about to say about this book.
This book is set nineteen years in the future. Harry and Ginny marry and have 3 children; James Sirius Potter and Albus Severus Potter, Lily Luna Potter, while Ron and Hermione married and have two children; Rose Granger-Weasley and Hugo Granger-Weasley. Harry is the head of Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic, while Hermione is head of Ministry of Magic. Ron manages Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes.
This book focuses on Albus and Rose’s first year at Hogwarts. While boarding the Hogwarts Express at Platform 9 3/4, Albus meets Scorpius Malfoy, Draco’s son. Albus and Scorpius are both placed in Slytherin House by the sorting house once reaching Hogwarts. This was somewhat of a shock to Rose as her family and Albus’ family are all from Gryffindor House. Albus struggles to fit in at Hogwarts, he feels there is reputation to live up to having his father being the famous Harry Potter, the boy who lived. Albus feels like he is nothing like his father after being placed into Slytherin instead of Gryffindor feeling like he is a disappointment to his father, putting a tremendous strain on his relationship with his father. Also putting a strain on his relationship with Rose because she becomes a popular student and joins the Gryffindor Quidditch team as a chaser.
In the mean time, Albus’ new best friend Scorpius is struggling with the death of his mother, Astoria dealing with the rumours that are spreading around the wizarding world that he is Voldemort’s son. This goes on for three years.
One Summer, an illegal Time-Turner is then confiscated by a death eater, causing the Ministry of Magic (Harry and Hermione) to look in recent activity that has occurred by Voldemort’s allies. During this series of events, they are found to be dealing with another matter at hand, involving Amos, Cedric Diggory’s father who turns up at Harry and Ginny’s house demanding Harry for the time-turner after hearing that the Ministry of Magic is in possession of one now. Amos wishes to use the time-turner so that he can go back in time to save his son with the support of his niece and caretaker, Delphi. However, Harry refuses to help Amos, in fear that it will change the future negatively. Albus, eavesdropping on the conversation is mad with his father for not helping Amos, and befriends Delphi.
Harry then tries to mend his relationship with Albus by trying to make a connection with him, through offering his old baby blanket to Albus. Albus refuses the give causing an argument causing a love potion to spill onto to the blanket accidently, both Harry and Albus end up telling each other that they wish they weren’t related, destroying what little bond they had left. Albus then leaves for his fourth year at Hogwarts while feeling hatred for his father. Albus and Scorpius take it upon themselves to then leave their journey to Hogwarts to steal the time-turner from the Ministry of Magic, against his Father’s wishes, as Albus blames Harry for Cedric death, so they head off to find Delphi to work along side them on their mission.
Harry starts to have nightmares about Voldemort, feeling pain in his scar, something that has not occurred since he defeated Voldemort 19 years ago. This causes Hermione, being the head of Ministry of Magic to hold a meeting concerning the possibility that Voldemort might be back. They do not get far with this, no one being convinced that there is a threat from Voldemort, Harry, Ginny and Draco soon find out that Albus and Scorpius are missing. They conclude that Albus ran away after the argument with his father, and Scorpius running away after being pulled into their family issues.
What they do not know though is that Delphi has helped Scorpius and Albus get into the Ministry of Magic, disguised as Harry , Ron and Hermione with the use of polyjuice potion allowing them to get the time-turner. Only to then end up on a whole new adventure where they change the past which ruins the future, trying to right their wrongs only to find out that Delphi isn’t who she says she is, she is Voldemort’s daughter. Starting a whole new journey for Albus and Scorpius which ends up allowing Albus and Scorpius to amend their relationships with their father.
I’m not going to add anymore about the plot because that will ruin the experience of reading the book yourself.
I absolutely loved this book! I’m giving it 5 stars because it is one of my favourite books in the Harry Potter series which is in my top 5 favourite book series! I would recommend it to anyone! I got so much excitement and enjoyment while reading this book, however I would have to say that I’m a bit disappointed that this book will not be released in novel form or as a movie! I feel like there were a few unanswered questions, even though it answered some questions that I had at the end of the 7th book, it left me with new questions that remained unanswered but I feel that almost every book series does that intentionally, whether that’s because they want readers to interpret things themselves or its the authors way of keeping it open for if they decide that they want to write another book later on. This book was well written and was rather easy to read, which is the good quality about scripts, they flow easily. however I would love this in novel form because I know in novel form it would be written in a different way with more detail, it would possibly answer the questions that I have. However, this was still a really good book and I wouldn’t want anything to change about the script itself.
